Leading the PMO Evolution
In building and evolving a truly effective Project Management Office, it’s vital that PMOs are architected in from the business need, supported by their PMO processes. There is often diminished value attributed to a PMO because they are focused inwardly on their processes versus business outcomes. It is important to create a partnership between the PMO and all groups within the organization including company executives. In many organizations, there is a prevailing disconnection that can be corrected with one key missing piece: effective communication.
PMOs excel at detail and a lot of it, while executives want to quickly get to the bottom-line facts they need to make informed decisions about: “Is a project on track or not?” “If not, why not and what can I do to help?” PMOs need to be able to articulate project and portfolio details illustrating value in a concise yet meaningful way, while organizations need to recognize and support the value their PMO enables.
